Why Does the Civil War Matter Today ?
The Civil war is a major factor in where we are today. If the Union did not win the war, the existence of slavery would most likely be present in our society today. The presence of racism towards blacks would also be present in our society. The economy would also have less low-paying jobs due to the slaves still being present, and doing those low-paying jobs for free, since they were slaves. This would lead to a bigger gap between the poor and the wealthy, and there would also be less middle-class.
Was the Civil War worth the cost?
The Civil War was worth its costs. 5.2 billion was spent on the war back then, both sides included. In today's money it would have been equal to 426 billion dollars. The war finally put a halt to slavery in the south, and it also opened the gates for blacks rights. A person's rights is priceless, so therefore the amount of money spent on the war was worth the cost of billions of dollars in exchange for millions of blacks rights and freedoms
Was the Civil War necessary?
The Civil War was heavily necessary in our world today, and in U.S. history. This is mainly due to:
- Liberation of slaves
- Abolition of slavery in the south
- The Confederacy rejoins the Union (more U.S. territory)
